Karachi, December 30, 2009: Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF), Tetra Pak Pakistan, the world’s leading food processing and packaging solutions company, and National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for developing and implementing a pilot project of feeding flavoured milk daily to school children in District Rahim Yar Khan.
Operated by the PPAF, the basic objective of this pilot project is to feed flavoured milk to school children of the 41 schools of Union Council Rasoolpur, District Rahim Yar Khan having an enrolment of nearly 5200 students starting December 2009 till the end of the academic year in June 2010. NRSP shall be responsible for implementing the pilot project as PPAF’s Partner Organization.
Tetra Pak, which has vast experience of implementing school milk programmes in over 50 countries during the last more than three decades and has set up a specialized unit, Food for Development Office, for implementing this programme in different countries, will assist PPAF and NRSP in implementing the Project.
Speaking on the occasion, Azhar Ali Syed, Managing Director, Tetra Pak Pakistan said that the School Milk Programme will motivate kids to go to school and will bring prosperity to the region. He said, “School Milk Programme is of high importance to us as milk is an essential food for kids. Milk gives them the daily nutrition that is most essential during their growing up period to have active mind and strong muscles. Children are the future of our country and working for their welfare is an important priority for us.” Tetra Pak and PPAF are dedicated to work together for the development and implementation of a school milk programme because of various health and nutrition related benefits for the school going children.
Tetra Pak has provided a contribution of Rs1.0 million to NRSP for implementing the project besides providing the packaging material at a special discount. to Shakarganj Food Products Limited. Shakaganj will supply the 200 ml flavoured milk packs at a special price of Rs. 12.08 per pack.
Kamal Hyat, Managing Director PPAF said, “This pilot school programme will encourage the school going kids and will help in raising their health and education standards. PPAF aims to make it a successful venture in order to set the platform for expanding its scale in the coming years.”
PPAF has appointed NRSP to implement the above pileot project as its Partner Organization whereas, numerous meetings have already been held between officials of PPAF and Tetra Pak for developing and implementing a pilot project of feeding flavored milk daily to school children. PPAF the main sponsor and financier of this pilot project – has recently embarked upon implementing PPAF III, a US$ 250 million World Bank funded program which includes large components for health, education, livelihood, microfinance etc.
After the successful completion of this pilot project, a full-scale school milk programme is planned to be implemented for which Tetra Pak will also assist. PPAF will work to generate financial support from the world charity industry, corporate sector and the government.
