Coca-Cola invests US $32 million in capacity expansion; plant inaugurated

Karachi, May 12, 2010: Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif inaugurated the expansion of the Coca-Cola plant, here today which has been set up with an investment of US $32 million. The capacity expansion of this state-of-the-art plant will generate several new jobs and benefit even more in the supply chain. 

Prominent among those who were present on the occasion were US Consul General in Lahore, Carmela Conroy, US government officials, Punjab government officials, representatives of the NGOs and members of the American Business Forum. 

Expressing his views on the occasion, Rizwan U. Khan, Country Manager, Pakistan & Afghanistan, The Coca-Cola Export Corporation said that Coca-Cola is committed to investing in Pakistan and has long-term sustainable plans. “We will invest another 34 million dollars in expanding our existing facilities in the next two years. This is just the start for us as we will be investing another 250 million dollars in Pakistan in the coming years by enhancing our capacity in the country.” 

He further said that the investment will strengthen our supply chain, increase capacity and provide a source of livelihood through direct and indirect jobs thus benefiting the community as a whole. 

He further said, “A measure of our confidence in the Pakistani market and the Pakistani consumer is the fact that, during the last few years, Coca-Cola has introduced several new brands in Pakistan and all of them have been very well received by the consumers. Our brands like Minute Maid, Kinley and Sprite 3G have done very well since their launch in Pakistan and we plan to introduce new products in the near future as well.” 

Earlier, Ahsan Rashid, Managing Director, Coca-Cola Beverages Pakistan Limited presented his welcome address and was followed by the address by the US Consul General in Lahore, Carmela Conroy. 

Chief Minister Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Sharif formally inaugurated the plant and addressed the audience. He appreciated Coca-Cola’s role in the growth of the industry and assured of his full support.

United States launches initiative for a “new beginning” in US-Muslim relations

Karachi, April 28, 2010: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright announced a new partnership between the US Department of State and Partners for a New Beginning on April 27 in Washington, DC.

Secretary Clinton and Former Secretary Albright announced the partnership between the US Department of State and Partners for a New Beginning (PNB), a new group of eminent Americans who will reach out to the private sector and work in close coordination with the Department of State to advance programs between the United States and Muslim communities.

Former Secretary Albright, who attended the announcement, will serve as the Chairwoman of Partners for a New Beginning. PNB will be an independent, self-administered group, with the Aspen Institute serving as its Secretariat.  Aspen Institute President Walter Isaacson and Chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company, Muhtar Kent will serve as Vice-Chairs.

About the initiative, Mr. Kent said, “The Coca-Cola system is established in over 200 countries around the globe, and in each of these, it operates as a local business with strong adherence to local traditions and customs generating economic value for the local communities. This year, we announced significant additional investments in countries like Malaysia ($302m) and Pakistan ($250m), while in the Arab world alone, our bottling partners operate 58 plants and employ 40,000 people, providing livelihoods for 500,000 families.”
 “Partners for a New Beginning” is a signature partnership by State Department to harness private sector support for the "new beginning” in US – Muslim relations expressed in President Obama’s June 2009 Cairo speech. This initiative was announced against the backdrop of the Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship which took place in Washington D.C. on April 26-27 and brought together approximately 300 or so businesspeople and entrepreneurs from 50 countries to highlight the importance of entrepreneurship to economic opportunity and community development. 

Coca-Cola supports teacher training program for IDP’s

Lahore, April-2010 – In partnership with Rising Sun Institute, Coca-Cola is initiating a teachers training program in Lahore. The teachers, belonging to IDP areas, will be trained to teach special children currently studying in government operated schools. Rising Sun Institute is amongst the first organization that has taken this initiative after the Government of Pakistan passed a rule for ‘inclusive education’, by which all schools will have special children enrolled in them by year 2025. 
Rising Sun Institute is a not-for-profit organization founded by Dr. Rao Abdul Tawwab along with his wife Mrs. Parveen Tawwab in 1984. Rising Sun works for the welfare of the special children in Pakistan. It endeavours to provide education and training facilities for the physically and mentally impaired special children. The training facilities include child assessment, physiotherapy, vocational and recreational training and much more. It is an organization which attempts to eradicate the stigma of these special children and incorporating them back into the society so that they have equal opportunities. 

While inaugurating the event, Coca-Cola Country Manager, Rizwan U. Khan said, “Supporting the cause of education for the special children, is one the important pillars of our overall CSR strategy. We, at Coca-Cola firmly believe in indiscrimination on any grounds and aim to help these individuals for a better future”. 

Coca-Cola is working with various NGOs for improving education standards in Pakistan. The Company has established partnerships with LABARD and CARE for promoting free education for underpriveledged children of our society. It is also successfully running its Adopt-a-School program in Lahore, Multan and Faisalabad.

Coca-Cola & WWF Pakistan enter second phase of Environment Conservation Project کوکا کولا اور ڈبلیو ڈبلیو ایف کا ماحولیاتی تحفظ کا منصوبہ

Karachi, March 12, 2010: Coca-Cola and WWF Pakistan’s partnership on improving sub-watershed management and creating environmental awareness in Ayubia National Park has delivered exceptional results in its first year. The main aim of the project is to initiate environmental conservation activities and create awareness about protecting our natural habitat.

Expressing his views about the project Rizwan U. Khan, Country Manager, Pakistan & Afghanistan, The Coca-Cola Export Corporation said that Coca-Cola is supporting this long-term project that deserves special mention. “Pakistan is a water-stressed country, a situation which is going to worsen in the coming years. Coca-Cola strives to create sustainable partnerships and therefore have partnered with WWF Pakistan for this unique project to improve sub-watershed management and environmental awareness in Ayubia National Park and surrounding villages”.

The project has progressed by improving the availability of water to the communities through watershed management. Approximately 15,000 tube plants have already been raised for forest nurseries. To stop soil erosion, the project has built check dams and treated several hectares of landslides. More than 15.25 hectares have been covered by plantation of indigenous species of trees and more than 775 fruit trees have been planted. A clean drinking water filtration plant for the local community is also fully operational.

Ali Hassan Habib, Director General, WWF-Pakistan said, “It has been 16 months since Coca-Cola and WWF-Pakistan embarked on this journey to conserve the environment. A rigorous amount of work has been performed to protect the resources of this particular area while developing habits to conserve nature. However, there is still is a long way to go and I hope more people will join us in this environmental cause”.

In the second phase, the project will construct 70 rain water harvesting structures, provide more solar powered ovens to reduce dependency on fuel wood and plant further 10,000 trees in the area.

COCA-COLA joins hands with Developments in Literacy (DIL) for education infrastructure support in Dir and Mansehra

Karachi, January 08, 2010: The Coca-Cola Export Corporation has joined hands with Developments in Literacy (DIL) – a US-based nonprofit organization – to provide funds for infrastructure development and provision of books for libraries in Mansehra and DIR, NWFP.

The funds provided by Coca-Cola will be utilized for the construction of libraries in seven schools in Mansehra and Dir with a total enrollment of nearly 700 students. The funds will also be utilized for infrastructure development like construction of new classrooms, erection of boundary wall and toilet facilities in 11 other schools in the same region with an estimated enrollment of about 500 students.

Expressing his views on the occasion, Rizwan U. Khan, Country Manager, Pakistan & Afghanistan, The Coca-Cola Export Corporation said, “Supporting the cause of education in Pakistan is one the most important pillars of our overall CSR strategy. Our first project with DIL is about setting up of libraries for young adults in Dir and Mansehra in the NWFP. We really look forward to forming a long-term partnership with DIL to further the cause of education in Pakistan.”

Imran Ahmed, Chairperson DIL said, "DIL is very grateful to Coca-Cola for donating funds to establish libraries enhanced with learning technologies. We know that Coca-Cola has a very high level of corporate social responsibility and is committed to improving the quality of primary education for underprivileged children in Pakistan.”
The seven libraries thus setup up in DIL schools in NWFP will provide immediate access to reading and resource material to nearly 700 hundred students. These materials, that aim to build a strong reading habit in the students, will reinforce their content knowledge and increase their general knowledge. It is also expected to improve their reading and listening skills, expand their vocabularies and develop their verbal and written language proficiency besides lifting the overall standard of the schools in the foreseeable future.
Developments in Literacy (DIL) is dedicated to providing quality education to disadvantaged children, especially girls, by establishing and operating schools in the underdeveloped regions of Pakistan, with a strong focus on gender equality and community participation.
Coca-Cola has supported the rehabilitation of IDPs by donating over Rs. 20 million in 2009.
