The reason is the Boroghul Pass is almost 2,000 feet lower plus more importantly the Duran Pass route goes through Bakakhshan area of heavy fighting during the Wars in Afghanistan. I admit that the road would be longer going through Baroghul but the area is peaceful. There has never been any fighting there, so that more than makes up for the extra length of the road.
